Antioxidants – Your Key to Optimum Health and Longevity…
Antioxidants are natural compounds that will help protect our bodies from damaging free radicals.
Through our disregard in eating a poor diet, making wrong food choices, no supplementation of vitamins / minerals and a lack of exercise, we leave ourselves susceptible to the effects of free radical damage, impeding our immune system, leaving the door open to infections and a variety of degenerative diseases.
Free radicals, is the number one enemy to our bodies, the major cause of premature aging and disabling disease’s. We are bombarded on a daily basis, weakening our natural defenses. Left unchecked, we can develop heart disease, cancer and a plethora of other disease’s . There are a number of known free radicals that occur in our bodies, the most common of which are oxygen-derived free radicals such as superoxide radicals, hypochlorite radicals, hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide, and a variety of lipid peroxides, and nitric oxide.
Free radicals may be formed in our bodies through the exposure to radiation, together with our exposure to the sun’s ray’s; contact with or breathing and handling industrial and household chemicals, including cigarette and cigar smoke; and polluted air in general. Free radicals scavengers that occur naturally in our bodies are the watch dogs of our system, neutralizing the free radicals is the job of the scavengers. There are certain enzymes that provide for this critical function in our bodies. Enzymes play a very important role in deactivating free radicals; of which there are four; in no particular order of importance: glutathione peroxidase, catalase, methionine reductase and superoxide dismutase.
There are numerous phytohemicals and nutrients that operate as antioxidants, jointly with vitamin A, beta-carotene and another carotenoids, flavonoids , vitamin C&E, and the mineral selenium. Another super and powerful antioxidant is the hormone melatonin, which is one of the most effective free radical neutralizer in the world today! Unlike most antioxidant that work only in certain parts on the cells, melatonin has the ability to infuse any of the cells in our body. Melatonin is one of the very few antioxidants that can enter the mitochondria, this is the cells power plant that produces energy that sustains us throughout the days activities.
Also, in the herb family, there are certain herbs that have antioxidant properties that one might consider. With the depletion of the antioxidants in our food today, through the pollution that permeates the environment, we could never get the amount of the antioxidants that it will take to ward of the free radicals and minimize the effects of free radical damage.
When considering the antioxidants that you will need and the correct combination of amounts, it is imperative you consult your health care provider. Diligently study nutrition books and consult with a nutritionist.
